Past Seasons

At Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist, employees Seymour and Audry are barely eking out a living. The future is looking pretty bleak… that is, until Seymour discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving and suddenly the shop becomes an overnight sensation. Soon the plant grows into an ill-tempered R&B singing carnivore who offers Seymour fame and fortune in exchange for feeding his growing appetite. One of the longest Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950’s sci-fi movies is a delectable delight!

(West Valley Light Opera), Pawnee Bill in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (Cabrillo Stage), Danny in BABY (Pacifica Spindrift Players) and The Ghost of Christmas Past in A CHRISTMAS CAROL (San Jose Children's Musical Theatre).

Ernestine Balisi (Shopette) returns to Bus Barn after appearing in A CHRISTMAS PUDDING earlier this season. She is delighted to return "home to Skid Row" having played the role of Ronnette with Milpitas Rainbow Theater over a decade ago! Favorite credits include Nehebka in AIDA, Ricky in A CHORUS LINE (both with Bus Barn), Ziegfeld's Favorite in THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES (South Bay Music Theater) and JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT (American Musical Theatre of San Jose; Mini Ginny Award for Best Female Actress). Ernestine will be seen next teaching/directing in Peninsula Youth Theatre's summer camp program: Theatre in the Park!

Ken Boswell (Mr. Mushnik) is always delighted to return to Bus Barn Stage Company. Patrons of Bus Barn may remember Ken from THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAEKESPEARE ABRIDGED, A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD (Snail/ Bird/Lizard), ENCHANTED APRIL (Fredrick Arnott) and last seasons LEADING LADIES (Jack/Stephanie). He has has also been keeping busy this past year performing at City Lights in THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT (Butch Honeywell) and DEAD MAN WALKING. He also appeared last summer with Foothill Music Theatre's production THE PRODUCERS (Franz Liebkind). When not performing in the Bay Area, Ken teaches theatre arts to young people.

Brett Carlson (Puppeteer) studied Theater Arts at SJSU, and was an intern at the Theatre Royal Bath in England where he worked with their youth theater program. He was last seen onstage in West Valley Light Opera’s production of West Side Story. Brett is a VJ for GrX church, and works at Hicklebee’s Children’s Bookstore in Willow Glen.

Dani Collins (Audrey) is a new performer to the Bay Area and is excited to be making her debut on the Bus Barn Stage.  When she is not singing, which is almost never, she enjoys traveling, yoga, and crocheting.  She would like to thank her family and friends for their love and support.

Jami James (Audrey II - Voice) is delighted to join the Bus Barn family. He last performed in RENT as the Seasons of Love soloist and Tom Collins understudy. Jami, better known as JJ, has been pursuing his acting career for a little over a year now and has fallen in love with performing. His first notable performance was as Mereb in Elton John's Aida. After spending time with his Bus Barn family he will be performing as Tom Collins in City Lights Theater Company’s production of RENT. JJ enjoys playing and coaching Ice Hockey and Baseball throughout the Bay Area, and trains in the Martial Art, of Mauy Thai. He thanks his Vocal coach Alexy Paris for the hard work and time he has put in with him to get him where he is now. Last but not least his understanding, loving and supporting "Cameron" - and his wonderful family too.

Heidi Kobara (Shopette) is a graduate of the Foothill Theatre Conservatory and a winner of the Wave's "Actress to Watch" for 2010.  She has been seen as Dr. Malaise in THE ALTOS..., Meg in LEADING LADIES and Hermia in MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM here at Bus Barn.  Heidi has been seen at City Lights playing Forgiveness From Heaven in THE WAITING ROOM and singing and dancing in A...MY NAME IS ALICE.  She has also done an internship and understudy work for Theatreworks.

Hayley Lovgren (Shopette) is excited to be performing for the first time at Bus Barn. Since Graduating from SCU in 2008, she has performed with Cabrillo Stage (JC Superstar), Jewel Theatre Company (Peggy The Musical), Actor's Theatre Center (Little Shop of Horrors), Tabard Theatre Company (A Taffeta Wedding), Foothill Music Theatre (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), and The Cardboard Box Theatre Project (The Importance of Being Earnest). In the fall she will be attending the Boston Conservatory of Music in pursuit of a Masters of Music in Musical Theatre.

Charles Mckeithan (Orin, Bernstein, Everyone Else) is more than a little happy to be playing the dentist and it’s not just the Nitrous Oxide. It's a bit of a left handed compliment when all your friends say you’re perfect for the part of the sadistic DDS who gets what’s coming to him - but he’ll take the good with the bad. This is his umpteenth show with Bus Barn and I hope to do a kajillion more. For more about Charles check his website at Charlesmck.com or the bio for the master carpenter. Thanks, as always, to my kids for donating my time away from them.

Conner Brown (Stage Manager) Working with Barbara and Bus Barn is always a pleasure, and Little Shop is no exception! Favorite credits include Over the Tavern, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Breaking Up is Hard to Do, and Treasure Island, to name a few. Originally from Florida, Conner earned a BA in Theatre and spent a summer in New York before settling in California. Now she spends her days providing engaging and fulfilling programming, events, and classes for older adults at Vintage Senior Living in San Jose.

Barbara J. Cannon (Artistic Director, Director) has worked professionally as a director since 1991, when she directed her first show with Hillbarn Theatre in Foster City.  Since that time, she has directed over 50 productions and served as Associate Director at Hillbarn Theater from 1991-1993, as Associate Artistic Director at Palo Alto Players from 1993-1998, and currently is Artistic Director at Bus Barn Stage Company.  She has also worked as an actor, singer, costume designer, set and props designer, and teacher at Foothill College.  Barbara is a graduate of UC Berkeley’s Dramatic Arts Department, and did postgraduate work at University of Hawaii, Manoa. She was awarded a 2003 Artists Fellowship for Stage Direction by Arts Council Silicon Valley.  For BBSC, she has directed 26, the most recent being A CHRISTMAS PUDDING and has designed a multitude of costumes, sets, and props.

Daya Curley (Assistant Director) happily returns to Bus Barn Stage, this time as a member of the production team.   She appeared here previously as an actor (under the name David Curley) in THE GOODBYE GIRL and JOHN & JEN.  She is now semi-retired from performing in order to concentrate on writing, directing and producing.   She co-wrote and directed the musical BECOMING BRITNEY, which had its world premiere at The New York International Fringe Festival in 2008.  This coming November, she will direct a new production of the show at Center Rep in Walnut Creek (becomingbritney.com).   In addition, she will once again help produce and also perform in the annual DIVAS FOR LIFE benefit concert in June, to be held at San Jose Rep on June 28th  (divasinconcert.com).

Chris Enni (Sound Design) has enjoyed working on sound design for the Bus Barn Stage.  In pursuing his writing career, Chris has had two of his plays produced at the Foothill College New Works Festival - THE MAN WHO MARRIED A DUMB WIFE and THE PUPPET FACTORY.  Before writing plays, Chris enjoyed writing songs featured on television, radio, and video.  And before that, he toured nationally with his band The Cardiff Reefers, which came to an abrupt end when he and his wife decided to have children.  And before that, he doesn't remember much - because of the children.  Chris also plays jazz, popular and classical piano as well as electric guitar in his current band, Bad Daddy (we really aren't that bad).  Thank you for coming to see another great show brought to you by your great local talent at the Bus Barn.

Ron Gasparinetti (Set Designer) was born and raised in Newark, NJ. He attended Essex Catholic High School and Montclair State University where he earned his BFA degree in technical theatre with a scenic design concentration. Ron worked the night shift for the Newark, NJ police department while attending college. He graduated in 1986. Ron has worked steadily since then as a technical director, scenic designer, lighting designer, props designer and production manager-sometimes all at once! He even forayed into the field of acting for a short time. Ron has been involved with over 400 productions in the last 30 years. He currently resides in California on the San Francisco Peninsula. In February of 2007, Ron joined forces with Charles McKeithan to form a new company: THRUST Scenic Design & Construction. To date, the company has built a clientele of 12 theatre companies in the Bay Area and has designed and built over 75 productions.

Emily Greene (Costume Designer) lives in Oakland and travels all over the Bay Area as a freelance set and costume designer.  Originally from Birmingham, Alabama Emily received a Masters of Fine Arts in set and costume design from Ohio University.  This is the fourth Bus Barn production Emily has designed costumes for, having previously designed The Importance of Being Ernest, Season’s Greetings, and Private Lives.  In the two years she has lived here, Emily has designed over 20 Bay Area productions working with many theatres including The California Shakespeare Theatre, The Palo Alto Children’s Theatre, Cutting Ball, and Crowded Fire.

Mark Hanson (Musical Director) is returning to Bus Barn Stage after working on the delightful A Year With Frog and Toad. Other Bus Barn credits include the Kander and Ebb revue The World Goes Round, The Goodbye Girl and The 1940’s Radio Hour. Other Bay Area credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee for Foothill College, Oliver for Contra Costa Musical Theatre and The King and I for Broadway By The Bay.

Ben Hemmen (Lighting Designer) returns to light Little Shop of Horrors, having most recent lit THE ALTOS for Bus Barn, as well as lighting Great Expectations for LAYT, and stage managing Priviate Lives before that. He does not regret living in the building since November, as the recent green addition is a good change of decor as well a someone to talk to, and he's so anemic from the efforts that he has no worries.  He's also looking forward to Frog's legs after the show.  Question and comment can be directed to ben@hemmen.com

Charles McKeithan (Master Carpenter) has been a handyman by day and an actor by night in the local Bay Area for the past ten years. Last year he joined forces with Ron Gasparinetti to form THRUST Scenic Design and Construction. He now has the pleasure of earning a living working in theater full time to help bring Ron's creative visions to life. For more on Charles visit www.charlesmck.com.

Lee Ann Payne (Choreographer) is excited to return to Bus Barn and work with Barbara, Mark, Daya and such a talented cast. Lee Ann holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University and is the Tap and Musical Theatre dance instructor at Zohar School of Dance in Palo Alto. Recent choreography credits include, Urinetown, Kiss Me, Kate, Pete n Keely, and Once Upon a Mattress. A Bay Area native, Lee Ann returned home to great weather after spending six years as an actor in NYC. Thank you, Barbara, for giving me the opportunity to work such a wonderful organization.

Patricia Tyler (Properties Design) is very happy to be designing props once more for Bus Barn! She has designed props for over 30 shows in the Bay Area. As an actress, some of her recent theatre credits include: BUS STOP (Grace) at Bus Barn, All MY SONS (Kate) at the Mountain View Second Stage, CHEKHOV IN YALTA (Lilina) at the Dragon, THE LONG CHRISTMAS RIDE HOME (puppeteer) at The Magic Theatre, METAMORPHOSES NICKEL AND DIMED (Barbara), THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (Maxine), and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM (Puck) at The Pear Avenue Theatre.
