WINNER OF THE 2005 PULITZER PRIZE AND TONY AWARD
In this brilliant and powerful drama, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students. Set in 1964 at a time before such scandals made the news, Sister Aloysius runs her church middle school with an iron fist and impervious moral rectitude. But when she questions the priest’s behavior without any proof, is it the pursuit of truth or the damnation of moral certainty?

Melinda Marks (Sister James) This is Melinda's first performance at Bus Barn, and she is very pleased to have the opportunity to do so in a role like this. She has performed at various theatres in and around the Bay Area since 1992. Melinda received a BA in Theatre from UCSC in 2008, and is working towards an MA in Performance studies at San Jose State University. She most recently appeared at Broadway West as Sophie in THE STAR SPANGLED GIRL and Myra Bruhl in Northside Theatre Company's production of DEATHTRAP. Diane Tasca (Sister Aloysius) is happy to be making her Bus Barn debut in this magnificent play. (She knew that her ten years of Catholic schooling would come in handy some day!) Diane is Artistic Director of the Pear Avenue Theatre in Mountain View, where she has played such roles as Mary Tyrone (LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT), Maria Callas (MASTER CLASS), and Emily Dickinson (THE BELLE OF AMHERST). Other favorite characters include Martha in WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? and Eleanor of Aquitaine in THE LION IN WINTER--both with Palo Alto Players. Big thanks to this remarkable cast and crew, to Barbara, and especially to Ginger. And to her husband of 31 years, Norm. |

Barbara J. Cannon (Artistic Director, Costume Designer) has worked professionally as a director since 1991, when she directed her first show with Hillbarn Theatre in Foster City. Since that time, she has directed over 50 productions and served as Associate Director at Hillbarn Theater from 1991-1993, as Associate Artistic Director at Palo Alto Players from 1993-1998, and currently is Artistic Director at Bus Barn Stage Company. She has directed 27 shows for Bus Barn, the most recent being ALMOST MAINE, and has designed a multitude of costumes, sets, and props.
Virginia Drake (Director) Virginia Drake recently retired from West Valley College where she was a Theatre Arts instructor for thirty one years, twelve of which were spent as department chair. This is her first production with Bus Barn but she is no stranger to the area. She grew up in Palo Alto, where her father started Midtown Shoe Repair in 1953, and it's still going strong today! Virginia directed AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY and FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL at City Lights, San Jose, as well as Renegade Theatre Experiment's OUROBOROS last season. She has also directed locally for TheatreWorks and Santa Clara University. Additionally, Virginia has had a full acting career on both Coasts and the Midwest. She holds an MFA in Drama (Acting) from Stanford University, a BA in Dramatic Art from the University of California, Davis, and a secondary teaching credential from San Francisco State University.
Chris Enni (Sound Design) is beginning his fourth year of sound design at Bus Barn. Having worked on fourteen productions beginning with THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE, ABRIDGED in 2008 up to this current production of DOUBT, Chris thinks he can solidly state that he has gotten his feet wet, in fact, quite soaked to the socks. Some favorites have been LEADING LADIES, SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE, SYLVIA, as well as the two mentioned above. Chris graduated from UCSD in 1990 with a degree in music, studying Prokofiev by day and playing reggae by night. His life is a bit different now as he continues to write, produce, and record during the day and by night, transform into a theater rat.
Ron Gasparinetti (Set Designer) Ron Gasparinetti was born and raised in Newark, NJ. He attended Montclair State University where he earned a BFA degree in scenic design. Ron worked the night shift for the Newark, NJ police department until his graduation in 1986.Ron has worked steadily since then as a technical director, scenic designer, lighting designer, props designer and production manager-sometimes all at once! He has been involved with over 400 productions in the last 30 years and has worked at many of the small to mid-sized theatre companies in the Bay Area since 1997. In 2007 he joined forces with Charles McKeithan to form THRUST Scenic Design and Construction and for the last five years THRUST has provided scenic services to many of the Bay Area theatre companies. Recently, THRUST was dissolved and now Ron works as a
freelance designer. More of his work can be seen at www.TheSetGuy.com.
Ben Hemmen (Stage Manager) Ben last stage managed for Bus Barn for CAMPING WITH HENRY AND TOM last season, and most recently did lighting design for ALMOST MAINE this season. "I offer this small set of facts: Two years ago, my sister's pastor was forced by the Archdiocese of Seattle to withdraw from public ministry due to a couple of claims of misconduct from about forty years ago. He was investigated, no charges were filed, and he later opted to leave the priesthood. Forty years ago he was the assistant pastor that trained me as an alter server. (we didn't wait for an offer of alter wine, and in reflection I think it was alter whiskey.) I have no reason to suspect, but I'll also never know what else may have happened." Question and comments to ben@hemmen.com. (In Memory: Terry Hemmen, 1924-2011)
Jenny Hollingworth (Assistant Director) is an associate artistic director for Arclight Repertory Theatre, for whom she has directed THE ZAHSMAN MURDERS, THE OVERCOAT, IN THE END, and a 1930s radio rendition of HAMLET, plus several staged readings. Before joining Arclight, she worked with The Tabard Theatre Company, for whom she directed MR. PIM PASSES BY and MORE THAN PETTICOATS. Originally from the UK, Jenny also works as a freelance writer, acting coach and financial blogger: her latest blog can be found at: askingfordirection.com
Nick Kumamoto (Lighting Design) This is Nick's second show light designing for Bus Barn Stage Company, the first being ANGELS IN AMERICA last season. If you can see the actors, he did his job. Enjoy the show!
Patricia Tyler (Properties Design) is very happy to be designing props once more for Bus Barn. She has designed props for over 30 shows in the Bay Area. As an actress, some of her recent theater credits include: MOON OVER BUFFALO (Charlotte) & BUS STOP (Grace) at Bus Barn, NOISES OFF (Dotty) at Coastal Rep, ANGELS IN AMERICA (Rabbi, Hannah, Ethel), OUR TOWN (Mrs. Webb), THE ILLUSION (Alcandre), METAMORPHOSES (Q & others) among others at The Pear, SEASCAPE (Nancy) at Dragon, THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT (Gloria, Mother Teresa) at City Lights. Her performing background includes puppetry (Lunatique Fantastique), improvisation (The Second City), mime (Seattle Mime Theatre) and film ("Dumbarton Bridge", "Trouble in Mind").
